We are delighted to announce that Tim Coles will be bringing his working model of the English Electric GT3 locomotive to the Show. The EM27L gas turbine powered loco was built in 1961 for British Rail. It had a maximum speed of 90mph, weighed 123.5 tons and had dark red livery. It undertook tests as a mainline loco but ultimately found no place in BR’s fleet. One disadvantage that contemporary diesel competitors such as the Deltic did not share was its single cab and the consequent need for a turntable. However, it has a place in history as the only British gas turbine powered loco. Amazingly, Tim’s model of the GT3 is also powered by a gas turbine. We hope to have it running at the Show so people can hear the uniques sound of this type of propulsion.
