An exciting newcomer to the show is the Lincoln University Virtual Forge. This is a project by computer scientists at the University of Lincoln that has created a “virtual blacksmith simulator”. You may have seen it featured on BBC Look North.
The team responsible for the virtual forge is led by Dr John Murray from the School of Computer Science. The Heritage Lottery Fund has supported the project which aims to revive the process of crafting techniques and craftsmanship for a new generation.
The virtual reality blacksmith’s forge allows people to “experience the environment of a forge and try out the techniques for themselves using bespoke software that integrates human motion capture tracking sensors.” The users can make their own objects, created in the virtual reality forge, by 3D printing them.
Chain Bridge Forge of Spalding (see photo above)- a traditional forge – is a partner of the virtual forge project. You can also see Chain Bridge Forge at the show.
